Common Feedback for Module 2 Assignments

(Same message posted to BBLearn Discussion Board area & course Twitter Announcement)

Please check the feedback and grades for your Module 2 assignments on BBLearn or Google Docs ASAP.

Below are a few common feedbacks for you to improve your final units.

·      Since we use Google Docs to submit the assignments, continue using it.  You do not need to resubmit or re-share it with me on Google Docs. I will visit the shared Google Docs to review your upcoming assignments.

·      The comments provided on Google Docs can be turned into discussions. Please feel free to use this feature to communicate with me to get further support to your final unit.  In fact, several of you have used this feature to get additional feedback and support from me.

·      Rationale: Many of us justified it from the needs for instructing certain content (technology-related or non-technology related).  It is critical for us to justify why web-based instructions (WBI) is needed. Go beyond WBI's convenience, how about the online collaboration, mobile learning, learner-learner interaction etc. These capabilities of WBI may not be easy to achieve in traditional FTF.

·      For overarching goals in Section 1. It is appropriate to have multiple ones and list them.  Generally, goals should be broader.

o   Goal I: xxx

o   Goal II: xxx

o   Goal III: xxx

·      Generally, we can have two to three objectives/outcomes to address each goal.  It is important to align our objectives to the goals. When identify them, be sure to they are workable and measure.  Frequently, some goals can be very difficult to implement and measure, even they are valuable to your design.  For example, "The students will browse the website."  How can we assess "browse?"  Based on this objective, if students browser the websites, they meet the requirements.  Is this all we want the students to achieve? Consider something like this: The students will identify and explain three key principles of Personal Learning Environment comprehensively.

·      We can use an outline format to present in additional to our descriptions.  The outline format would assist us to plan and develop out unit.

o   Goal I: xxx

§  Objective 1/outcome 1

§  Objective 2/outcome 2

§  Objective 3/outcome 3

o   Goal II: xxx

§  Objective 1/outcome 1

§  Objective 2/outcome 2

§  Objective 3/outcome 3

o   Goal III: xxx

§  Objective 1/outcome 1

§  Objective 2/outcome 2

§  Objective 3/outcome 3

·      For your improvement, you can align your designs to your goals and objectives. Or you can add anything relevant or aligned design to your outline.

o   Goal I: xxx

§  Objective 1/outcome 1

·      Assessment

·      Instructional Strategies

·      Web tools

§  Objective 2/outcome 2

·      Assessment

·      Instructional Strategies

·      Web tools

§  Objective 3/outcome 3

·      Assessment

·      Instructional Strategies

·      Web tools

·      Prerequisite knowledge or skills: Since our unit has some WBI, how do we know our learners would adept with online learning well?  Most of learners have never had online learning experiences. As ETC online learners, I am sure you would agree that online learning takes very different types of learning motivation, knowledge, skills, perceptions, and attitudes.

·      Remember, our unit should be web-based materials and instructions related. Many of you missed on WBI components.  Even we plan to design a FTF unit, we should have WBI components as considered as hybrid or web-enhanced unit.  Typically, we focus in discussing the "content" which can be technology-related or non-technology related. Remember, we should have WBI design in our unit.

·      Data Collection Instrument: Many of you provided workable instrument to assess the learning content in your unit but many of us overlooked the capability and ability to assess "delivery technologies" and "(online) instructional strategies."  A comprehensive assessment should be capable to assess three parts: content, delivery technologies, and instructional strategies.  Assessing content the easy since we are educators. We are very familiar with such assessment.  Assessing delivery technologies is referred to whether the delivery technologies we integrate effective, such as website, blog, wiki, mobile devices etc.? Assessing (online) instructional strategies is referred to whether the integrated instructional strategies (online collaboration, online reflection, mobile collaboration etc.) effective. How do we know online collaboration is effective? Perhaps mobile collaboration would be more effective to your unit? How do we know online multimedia effective? Perhaps online simulation is more effective to your unit.  Think deeper so you can come up more comprehensive assessment plan, instruments etc.

·      You can have separated instrument to measure delivery technology and instructional strategies.

·      Avoid the confusion of the content and the delivery technology: Some of us intend to teach Web 2.0 tools (EX: wiki etc.) in the unit.  If this is the case, our unit content is "using wiki." The delivery technology can be Learning Management System (LMS), like BBLearn, multimedia, like YouTube video, discussion board etc.
